Values
The Norwegian fish farming industry has changed a great deal over the last ten to twelve years. Currently, there are around 850 licences for the farming of salmon and trout in Norway. In 1990, most fish farmers had only one licence. Today small, family-owned farms own only 30 per cent of the licences in Norway, while just 35 companies own the remaining 70 per cent.
The members of HAVdyrkerne own 1-5 licences each. These are family-owned businesses which are located in the rural areas of Norway. Most of them are located in the counties of Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal. Our farmers have chosen to continue in this industry even though they could get a good price for their licences and in spite of the major fluctuations in the market.
Profit is more than just capital for HAVdyrkerne. It is also a means of creating more value and pumping more life into their local communities: better schools, day-care centres, infrastructure and so on.
Several of our members participate in other businesses that depend on the security provided by fish-farm production. This especially applies to the packing stations Skjærgårdsfisk AS and Bru Fiskeindustri AS and the smoked-salmon company
Svanøy Herregard AS.
Our farmers in
Hyen are especially working with the preservation of the wild salmon stocks in the Aa and Ommedal rivers. In Bjordal,
Sandshamn,
Helligvær and on the island of
Batalden the farmers are engaged in the tourist industry, rural development and other local activities.
Many of our members are politically active and participate in central industry organizations.
